Museum of Art - DeLand
Event Description
From South Korea to Italy, by way of DeLand, Florida, painting, sculpture and prints will fill all five galleries at the Museum’s 600 N. Woodland Blvd. location. Chia studied drawing, fresco (mural painting on plaster) and sculpture at the “Instituto d’Art” in Florence between 1962 and 1969. In the late 1960s he travelled through India, Turkey and Europe. In 1970 Sandro Chia settled in Rome, where he held his first exhibition at the “Galleria La Salita” in 1971. From the early 1980s until 1999 he had an additional studio in New York. During the 1970s, Chia focused on conceptual art and along with Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Mimmo Paladina, in the late 70s, was part of the Italian Neo-expressionism (modern, romantic) art movement Transavanguardia (moving beyond the new and unusual), which rediscovered classical themes using a representational style.
